Welcome to this portfolio of my paintings of Maine! Inspired by the light and subjects all around this beautiful state, I try to capture the essence of this time and place. Please send me an email at amy.cornell@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or inquiries!
I love to paint boats! There are no straight lines, so getting the curve of the gunwale or the sail in the sunlight are so important! And of course, the water, the way the light catches the wave, whether large or just small ripples, is always the challenge!
The Maine landscape has its own individuality. Not only the different light in different seasons, but the various flowers and trees, and of course the architecture reflecting Maine's history and way of life.
The first painting I ever sold was "Afternoon Snack'" a Belted Galloway nursing a calf. I forgot to take a photograph, so it remains only in my memory -- and on someone's wall! From the encouragement that buyer gave me, I have gone on to paint many more cows, and birds, and chickens, and cats, and dogs ....

When the weather doesn't allow for painting outside, I retreat to my studio and train my eye and hand on the intricacies of the still life. And interiors are still lifes on a larger scale!

Here are a few of my paintings that have found homes! Like children sent off into the world, they will always remain in my heart.

Setting up my easel with a palette knife in hand, I am challenged to capture the character, and the mood of Maine, be it landscapes, seascapes, birds, or still life - the essence of a time and place....... I look for the iconic scene that tells a story of Maine.
Birds have become my passion. First watching, then counting for bird counts, now painting them. Also boats have become a major subject in my work. Having grown up with boats, I am drawn to capturing the beauty of the classic shear line, the curve of a sail, or the working lobster boat underway. My paintings are usually small in scale, practically sculpted out of the paint with my palette knife with which I try to add depth and dimension to the subject.
My work has ended up in homes as far away as California and Spain (that I am aware of), as well as in many homes in Maine.
Thank you for visiting my website!

During the time of Covid, I have been learning to paint with Gouache (not always easy!). Mostly I have been painting/sketching in a Pentalic sketchbook, although some are on small 6x6 Aquaboard. Mostly a chronicle of this year, although some are from photos taken previously.
